Fermented Kid (And Adult) Approved Snacks

Today I wanted to introduce you to one of my favorite kid and adult approved snacks – Paleovalley Meat Sticks!

Who isn’t looking for an easy, portable, healthy snack? These meat sticks are something we always have in our pantry and in my bag for on the go.

They come in two varieties: beef and turkey and in many flavors to accommodate everyone’s tastes.

And best of all, they are good for you, so no guilty snacking here!

So what makes Paleovalley stand out from other meat stick companies?

Did you know most conventional meat sticks on the market are loaded with all sorts of stuff that is not good for your body:

  • Trans fats (which cause inflammation, obesity, and even cancer)
  • Sugar (yep, they even put sugar in meat sticks)
  • GMOs (many “grass fed” cows are also fed GMO corn)
  • Encapsulated citric acid (commonly derived from GMO black mold… yuck)
  • Refined salt (which is stripped of the vital minerals, and flavor, of sea salt)
  • Allergens (like gluten, dairy, soy, and MSG)

But not Paleovalley! Let’s dive in a bit further on some other ways they stand out against other meat stick companies!

First up, the quality of the meat.

Factory-farmed conventional meats are full of antibiotics which have been linked to unexplained weight gain in humans and even more frightening – antibiotic resistance. Continued exposure to antibiotics has created “superbugs,” or illnesses that don’t respond to antibiotic treatment. Consuming such meat is literally destroying our bodies’ ability to fight infection. According to the World Health Organization 80% of antibiotics used in this country are on livestock!

They are also often injected with additives you would never want to eat. The most alarming of these include growth-promoting hormones, which have been found to cause:

  • Cancer
  • Premature puberty
  • And more

Finally, animals that are not free to eat the natural food they are intended to eat, means they are supplemented with corn, grain and soy feed which can be (and usually is) genetically modified.

Paleovalley solution – grass fed and finished beef and pastured raised turkey.

You may or may not be familiar with grass fed beef, but more recently is the idea of grass fed and finished beef. This is important because grass fed cows can still be given inflammatory GMO feed at the end right before slaughter time. Grass fed and finished meat has been shown to have many benefits including:

  • Higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids
  • Optimal omega-3 to omega-6 ratio
  • Rich source of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)
  • More life-sustaining minerals
  • Increased vitamins
  • Higher concentration of the master antioxidant, glutathione

Turkeys naturally evolved to eat a diverse diet that’s rich with insects, berries, nuts, and fresh grains which have more vitamins and minerals for both them and us. Yet most are force-fed a toxic diet of GMO feed laced with antibiotics.

Turkey that is allowed to graze freely contains far more nutrients than factory-farmed turkey. In fact, pastured turkey has increased levels of:

  • Omega 3
  • Vitamin E
  • Beta Carotene
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Protein

(Side note: labels are so misleading because free range and cage free doesn’t mean they are truly out roaming pastures eating this intended diet. Instead, the more likely scenario is a tiny access door that they may or may not know is there because they are in such a tight crowded space with other turkeys. And if they are lucky enough to get out in the fresh air, it may not even be to a grassy place)

Secondly, these meat sticks are naturally fermented.

99% of meat sticks on the market are “preserved” by coating them with citric acid and hydrogenated vegetable oil (i.e. trans fat) and adding it on the label as “encapsulated citric acid” or just “citric or lactic acid”. Encapsulated citric acid is a nasty little ingredient that sounds harmless but can actually be VERY health destructive. First, the manufacturers take citric or lactic acid (most often derived from black mold grown on GMO corn) and they then coat it in hydrogenated vegetable or soy oil. When the meat sticks are heated, the oil coating melts into the meat and the citric acid is released for preservation purposes.
