Now more than ever is a great time to be focusing on our health and keeping our immune system strong.
I truly believe food is medicine and focusing on the foods you consume will drastically impact your health, positively or negatively, depending on the choices made.
In a previous article I shared some immune boosting foods to consider adding into your diet. Today, I am going to share some ideas for supplements you may want to consider as well.
I firmly believe in taking a holistic approach to your health by focusing on nutrition of course, but also movement, sleep quality and quantity, stress management, your environment and so much more! Sometimes we need a little extra help though!
The supplements I included in this list are compiled after reviewing recommendations from many in the Functional Medicine healthcare world, including the Institute for Functional Medicine, Parsley Health (a Functional Medicine practice), and Dr. Elisa Song (a Functional Medicine practitioner). This is not an exclusive list and I encourage you to work with your own health care team to develop a plan for yourself. These are supplements that the general public could likely benefit from and help boost their immunity, which we all know is especially important right now.
Now onto that list I promised you!
Eight Immune Boosting Supplements
- Vitamin D 5000 IU daily
- Zinc 30-60 mg daily in divided doses
- Vitamin C 1-3 g daily (to bowel tolerance)
- Omega 3 Fatty Acids 1000 mg daily
- Curcumin / Turmeric 500-1000 mg (make sure it also has black pepper in it for absorption)
- Quercetin 1000mg twice daily
- N-Acetylcysteine 600-900 mg twice daily OR liposomal Glutathione 250-500 mg daily
Before you head to the local drug store to load up, it is important to note that the quality of supplements is very important. The supplement market is a saturated one and with that there are plenty of companies not making great products. I personally use Fullscript Dispensary which offers practitioner grade supplements that are quality tested to make sure what the label says you are buying is what you are actually getting. Food based supplements are also another great option and as close to the actual food as you can get.
Remember to support your health holistically by focusing on the foods you consume, sleeping well (and enough!) and managing your stress. If you are looking for an extra boost, consider adding in these supplements.
